Spanish Study Circle
About Us
Origins of the Study Circle
The Spanish Study Circle was founded in 1956 to promote the study of the stamps and postal history of Spain and its former colonies in Africa, America and the Philippines. The Study Circle has a world-wide membership of over 100, including respected members of the Spanish Royal Academy of Philately, and is itself a member of this Academy.
The AGM is in the spring, during a weekend meeting in Bournemouth held from Friday evening until Sunday lunchtime. Members can show displays, exchange information, buy and sell at the bourse throughout the weekend and join in the various social activities with their guests.
Members made visits to Spain in 1987 for the National Exhibition in Gerona and again in 1992 for the Granada International Exhibition. This was followed by visits to “Madrid 2000”, “Valencia 2004” and “Malaga 2006” International Exhibitions. In 2010 there was a joint display with the Malaga society. and a further visit to Malaga in 2015. Another visit is planned for 2018
The society’s magazine “España”, which first appeared in 1957, is published twice yearly in A4 format and is devoted to articles on Spanish stamps and postal history, questions and answers, literary reviews, advertisements of members’ wants etc. A newsletter provides general information on exhibitions, society meetings, publications and study groups.
The Study Circle also publishes a series of pamphlets covering specialist studies that are too long to be included in the magazine. Twenty-four have been published so far, all at modest prices to encourage members to extend their knowledge of Spanish philately.
There is an annual postal auction and a thriving exchange packet, the latter confined to U.K. members.
